Rembrandt has transformed the classic marriage portrait into something more ingenious. This etching marks the first time Rembrandt has depicted himself as an artist at work. He holds a porte-crayon (a two-ended chalk holder) in his left hand, which looks like he has been drawing on the paper before him. By identifying himself as a draftsman, Rembrandt brings attention to his mastery of an artist's most crucial essential skill – drawing.
