In 1969, only four years before his death, the ingenious master Picasso received a large shipment of art supplies from Paris. He opened the boxes filled with paints and brushes in his Mougins studio along the French Riviera. In a moment of inspiration, he decided to paint a series of portraits on the cardboard boxes that had contained the supply shipment and were then scattered around his studio. The striking and well-known portraits were bright and playful, and they featured a group of imaginary seventeenth-century Spanish nobles on a corrugated cardboard surface.
