In The Lawyer, Salvador Dalí imagined the drama, power, and showmanship involved with being a trial attorney. Pictured is the lawyer of Dalí’s imagination, front and center, making dramatic oratory gestures in a red, white, and blue courtroom. The central figure preaches to the jurors, while clouds of black smoke billow around him. He is backed by a gigantic looming white owl (a symbol for wisdom) with black eyes turned into vortices, and the scales of justice floating in its head. It is a lawyer’s job to tip those scales into his clients’ favor, and Dalí is illustrating this vividly.
