The remarkably detailed face of Elijah is shown in uncharacteristically fine strokes as Dalí has used the engraving tool with great precision. Shock and surprise show on the countenance of the greatest prophet of the Hebrew scriptures as he is swept to heaven in a chariot. As 2 Kings 3 describes the event, “… suddenly a chariot of fire and horses of fire appeared and separated the two of them, and Elijah went up to heaven in a whirlwind. Elisha saw this and cried out, “My father! My father! The chariots and horsemen of Israel!” And Elisha saw him no more.”
